We were at Aunt Grace’s farm and her sons were playing battle in the snow. I wanted to play, too. They said I could be the princess they fought over.
There was an igloo that would be my ‘tower’ and we set icicles in the doorway for bars. One of the boys was my ‘guard’.
I felt so SPECIAL.
For a little bit.
Then my guard left.
I tried to sneak out.
The boys who hadn’t been interested at all in playing with me as a princess were very motivated to keep me out of their way and back in my snow-prison.
That’s when I realized what they never tell you as a little girl when they tell you how amazing it is to be a princess and how all your dreams should be princess-shaped:
Being a princess SUCKS.
It really, really does. I resolved then and there to be the knight charging the tower, not the princess waiting to be rescued, and in general, it’s worked out well for me.
