For the 2015 Clarion Write-a-Thon I have pledged to write 50 stories by August 1. I’ve written 17 short story drafts so far. Here they are, in order:
1. The 7th Street Matriarchy – 1,700 words – a group of women trying to save their public housing project with distributed computing.
2. Remember for Me – 1,300 words – idea from my husband – someone alters recordings to change the past for a lover with Alzheimer’s.
3. This is an Optimistic Science Fiction Story About the Future – 1000 words and pretty much what it says on the tin. Kinda meta.
4. Floating – 2,100 words – refugees looking for a home on a Venus colony. What’s it like to be homeless when air isn’t free?
5. Subscription Life – 1,700 words – a re-write of an old story of mine. A world where you buy a subscription service to a lifestyle – home, job, everything.
6. Shayla – 1,900 words – based on the song by Blondie – a factory worker signs up for an outer space mission.
7. Space Trucking – 1,600 words – suggested by Azimars – long haul space freighters deal with the end of gorilla space radio.
8. We Weren’t Any of Us Heroes – 2,400 words – meant it to be an exercise in multiple POV and ordinary characters – turned into ice cream van saves city from Godzilla. May change title to “We All Scream”.
9. The Dez and Alex Space Program – 2,800 words – two kids team up to build a rocket for the science fair and discover new life. (Partially inspired by Paul’s ‘meteorite causes animal mutation’)
10. Ron and Galle – 1900 words – Romeo and Juliet from Mercutio’s perspective, on Mars. And Juliet is a crater.
11. Trials of the Teenaged Incubus – 1500 words – Adrian just hit puberty and all the girls at school know it. How can he get out of this gig?
12. From Common Household Objects – 3,400 words – written as though by a 1950s writer – housewife must save herself and hubby on Mars, while still getting dinner ready on time, of course.
13. Boy Inventors Make Lousy Neighbors, Sometimes – 1800 words – Boy genius invents giant robots, alienates best friend. Also adolescent boys deal with difficulty of expressing emotion.
14. An Ohio Story – 1300 words – a lonely woman 3d-prints the perfect man.
15. War games – 1400 words – computer game AIs decide to give peace a chance.
16. The Day the Town Turned Gay – 2000 words – so someone invents a drug that changes your sexual orientation.
17. “Tesselate” Ursula’s request for a story about 4th Dimensional bees.
Uh… what should I do next?
Nothing inspires me to write like donations! Consider it. 😉
[edit: yes, I am editing this post as I write new stories so you can come back here to see what my weird mind is cooking up!] byby
